Melody’s Story

Meet Melody. After experiencing complications and loss with a previous pregnancy, Melody was terrified to find herself pregnant in June of 2022. She was connected with Healthier Moms and Babies at a WIC appointment; Melody says, “I was just hoping for a little assistance from Healthier Moms and Babies, but I ended up with so much more.”

Melody was paired with her nurse home visitor, Tichelle. Tichelle offered prenatal education and encouragement throughout Melody’s pregnancy. They discussed baby’s growth, the importance of tracking kick counts and more. The impact of their visits went beyond Melody’s prenatal health. Our home visitors encourage our families to look towards their healthiest future. “Without Healthier Moms and Babies, I don't think I'd have been confident enough to pursue higher education. It was the first time someone sat down with me to discuss my goals and make them feel real,” Melody says. Melody made goals to enroll in school and have a full-term pregnancy.

In September of 2022, at 39 weeks, Vergil was born happy and healthy. Tichelle and Melody will continue to meet until he turns 2 years old. Melody cherishes the time she has with Healthier Moms and Babies—the support, access to internal and community resources, and constant encouragement has been a instrumental.  Melody encourages others to benefit from the support of Healthier Moms and Babies, saying “Healthier Moms and Babies is a great support network. Whether you need parenting classes, diapers, want to start working out, or just need someone to talk to, they will make sure you get what you need and then some. I'm so glad I decided to give Healthier Moms and Babies a chance.”

Melody has loved becoming a mom. She is excited to see Vergil grow into his own independent person. She says, “being a mom makes me feel whole, like I have a purpose and a need to do better now. He's really helped me love myself too, because I can't take care of him unless I take care of me too.”

We’re so excited to cheer Melody on as she embarks on her first year of motherhood and continues in her degree. Way to go Melody!
