Latasha’s Story
Meet Latasha. In the spring of 2021, Latasha connected with Healthier Moms and Babies. She says, “I was excited and anxious because I didn't know what to expect.” She turned to Healthier Moms and Babies to help navigate her pregnancy, community resources, and her healthy future for her family.
In March of 2021, Latasha was smoking 3-4 cigarettes a day. With her case manager, Rachelle, Latasha identified triggers that led her to smoking, reasons for quitting, and ways to help manage her cravings. Rachelle also provided education regarding healthy habits, nutrition, and exercise in pregnancy. In September of 2021, Gabriel was born happy and healthy. Following his birth, Latasha and Rachelle continued to meet; Rachelle helped the family stay connected with Medicaid, WIC, and a program provided Christmas presents that year. Latasha appreciated the support and coordination of care she received from Rachelle. This help and support allowed Latasha to focus on her growing family and, as she says, “being the best mom I can be to my littles.”
In April of 2022, Latasha reported a new pregnancy. After multiple complications before Gabriel, Latasha was hopeful for another healthy pregnancy. Latasha and Rachelle continued to meet, discussing coping skills, pregnancy care, and resources for young families. Latasha was still learning to navigate her tobacco cravings with Rachelle’s continued encouragement. In December of 2022, Skylar was born. While he required a short stay in the NICU, he is growing happy and healthy with his family. During her hospital stay, Latasha quit tobacco use all together—and has stayed quit since!
Through her pregnancies, Latasha has appreciated the dedication of her case manager, Rachelle. She says, “If it weren’t for Rachelle, my pregnancy probably wouldn't have we the same. She helped find me resources so we could stay in our home. She helped supply diapers for the babies and formula when there was a shortage. She helped with getting a pack and play for both children. She is just a wonderful person all the way around.” We are so proud of Latasha and her family!
